When Mr. Porter announces he's going on strike for better wages, his wife Mrs. Porter has her own revolution to declare: she's striking from the housework. What follows is a glorious battle of the sexes played out in a shambles of a home, with Mr. Porter frantically trying to manage children, cooking, and cleaning while his wife enjoys well-earned leisure. W. W. Jacobs, the master behind "The Monkey's Paw," deploys his trademark wit to expose the absurdity of undervaluing domestic labor. The comedy builds to a perfectly ironic conclusion: when Mr. Porter returns home triumphant from his successful work strike, he discovers his wife's demands have escalated to stratospheric heights. Sharp, timely, and endlessly funny, this is early 20th-century social satire at its most entertaining.
