He recovers the cash, pretends it was lost, and then proceeds to shower his friends with generosity they slowly realize he shouldn't be able to afford. The suspicion builds. The plotting begins. And in true Jacobs fashion, nobody comes out clean. This is early 20th-century British comedy at its finest: warm, wicked, and ruthlessly funny about the lengths friends will go to deceive each other. Jacobs understood something essential about working-class camaraderie, that it lives in the ribbing, the cons, the elaborate schemes to get one over on your mate while still being the first to buy the next round.
