Three sailors on shore leave, a widow with a shop, and a cascade of comic disasters. That's the anatomy of W.W. Jacobs's beloved collection, anchored by the irascible Sam Small, whose grumbling about life at sea is only outmatched by his grumbling about life on land. Alongside his mates Ginger Dick and Peter Russet, Sam spins tall tales, bungles romances, and stumbles through misunderstandings with the gruff tenderness of men more comfortable with storms than sentiment. The opening story finds Sam pursuing Mrs. Finch with all the grace of a man who has never quite mastered navigation on dry land, and the collection only deepens from there. Jacobs captures something vanishing about Edwardian Britain: the camaraderie of working men, the absurd dignity of small ambitions, and the particular humor of people who know they're ridiculous but proceed anyway. These are short stories built for an afternoon, tales to be finished between cups of tea, but they linger like salt air.
