When old Clark dies and leaves his nephew Joe a tidy fortune, there's one catch: the money comes with strings attached. Specifically, it comes with a white cat possessing one yellow eye and one blue eye, and Joe must ensure the creature survives. The cat has been so thoroughly pampered by its former owner that keeping it alive becomes a heroic endeavor involving a devoted caretaker, paranoid neighbors, and the entire village's collective anxiety about a feline's wellbeing. W.W. Jacobs, master of British comic short fiction, constructs a wry satire about greed and attachment told through the lens of an absurd premise: what happens when a man's inheritance depends entirely on a cat's continued breathing. The village erupts into comedic chaos when the cat vanishes, and the hunt reveals as much about human nature as it does about our peculiar relationships with animals. The ending carries genuine poignancy beneath its humor, revealing that love sometimes wears peculiar disguises.
