W. W. Jacobs, the master behind "The Monkey's Paw," turns his gimlet eye to the perennial follies of romance in this charmingly awkward tale. Albert Sharp has set his sights on winning Miss Florrie Garland's affection, but he hadn't counted on her fearsome uncle Mr. Culpepper, a man whose very presence seems to swallow every romantic moment before it can begin. During Florrie's birthday celebration, Sharp finds himself tangled in a web of misguided advice, social blunders, and hilariously mistimed declarations that would make any reader wince in recognition. Each attempt at romance backfires spectacularly: the wrong gift, the ill-timed comment, the jealous uncle materializing at the worst possible instant. Jacobs captures that particular British comedy of embarrassment where a character's mounting disaster unfolds with agonizing precision. It's a small, perfectly formed joke about the way love makes fools of us all, and how the path to someone's heart is rarely as straightforward as we hope.
