The sea has a long memory, and so do the men who sail it. When Nick Gunn strides into the seaside inn run by the aging Mullet and his stepdaughter Joan, fresh from fifteen years in prison, he brings the weight of old crimes with him. With nowhere else to turn and no one to answer to, Gunn assumes command of the tavern with the casual cruelty of a man who has forgotten any other way to live. Mullet, whose conscience still bears the scar of his own complicity in Gunn's past crimes, finds himself trapped between the cowardice of his silence and the desperate need to protect the girl he's raised as his own. The inn becomes a prison of its own, and Joan a hostage to a past she never made. Then Captain Rogers returns. The man who once sailed with Gunn and Mullet emerges from the shadows of his own disappearance, bearing the weight of everything they left unfinished on the water. What follows is a reckoning. Jacobs builds the tension with the slow, inexorable dread of a rising tide, each scene tightening like a knot until the final confrontation tears it loose. This is vintage Jacobs: dark, atmospheric, morally complex, and utterly unwilling to offer easy comfort.
