The fire burns low in the White family's parlor on a dark, rainy night when Sergeant-Major Morris arrives with a story and a relic. And the paw grants this too, until that final, terrible knock at the door, when the story pivots from tragedy into something far more unsettling. Jacobs understood that horror isn't found in monsters, but in the terrible weight of getting exactly what you asked for.
