Short Stories

The fire burns low in the White family's parlor on a dark, rainy night when Sergeant-Major Morris arrives with a story and a relic. The monkey's paw is dried and withered, its tiny fingers curled as if clutching something invisible. Three wishes it will grant, Morris warns, but the price is always exacted in ways you cannot foresee. Mr. White laughs at such superstitious nonsense and wishes for two hundred pounds. The money arrives within days, along with news of his son's violent death in a factory accident. Grief drives his wife to demand he wish Herbert back. And the paw grants this too, until that final, terrible knock at the door, when the story pivots from tragedy into something far more unsettling. Jacobs understood that horror isn't found in monsters, but in the terrible weight of getting exactly what you asked for.
