Manners Makyth Man: Ship's Company, Part 12.
A night-watchman on a Thames pier believes he's performing a good Samaritan act when a young boy claims to have fled an abusive home. His earnest attempt to help the lad find his father spirals into delightful chaos when he discovers he's been conned twice: first by the cunning boy, then by the boy's even more cunning sister, who turns out to be considerably more than she initially seemed. W.W. Jacobs, the master of comic short fiction, builds his joke with expert precision, layering one misunderstanding atop another until the watchman is left red-faced, irritated, and oddly charmed despite himself. The title phrase "Manners Makyth Man" - an old proclamation that good breeding defines a gentleman - gets thoroughly satirized as Jacobs reveals that in this world, everyone's pretending to be something they're not. The comedy lands because the deceptions are playful rather than malicious, and the watchman's pomposity is the real target throughout.
