Two friends, Ted Denver and Charlie Brice, have sailed through life together. They share everything: quarters, rations, and an easy companionship that borders on the inseparable. Then along comes Emma White, and suddenly Ted's gaze drifts toward matters far from the sea. Charlie finds himself abruptly marooned on the sidelines of his own friendship, watching the dynamic shift as Ted pursues romance. Emma, though, won't tolerate a third wheel. She gives Ted an ultimatum: her or Charlie. But the waters grow even choppier when Mrs. Jennings, a widow with her own romantic designs, enters the picture and threatens to pull both men into her wake. What follows is a perfectly executed comedy of errors, misunderstandings, and male panic, culminating in Charlie's spectacular retreat from a mistaken suitor, hatless and flustered. Jacobs proves himself once again the master of the British short story, extracting humor from the universal predicament of friendship under pressure and love's tendency to complicate everything.
