The title is the joke. A night-watchman reflects on kindness and its consequences while suffering through his shift, sharing tales of his friend Sam Small - a man whose willingness to help has never once ended well for him. In this particular misadventure, Sam is recruited for a scheme to catch thieves who have been robbing sailors. The plan: Sam pretends to be drunk and easy prey, luring the criminals into robbing him so they can be caught in the act. What Sam doesn't know is that his "friends" have orchestrated the whole thing as an elaborate ruse to rob him themselves. The comedy unfolds in brutal simplicity - good intentions colliding with betrayal, a man fighting off people he thought were on his side, and the fundamental absurdity of expecting gratitude for trying to do the right thing. Jacobs, better known for "The Monkey's Paw," shows his lighter touch here: working-class London life rendered with affection and sharp observation, where helping your mates is just as likely to get you a black eye as a thank-you. The story endures because it's ruthlessly honest about human nature - we help others expecting something back, and when we get burned, we're surprised.
