W.W. Jacobs knew that the Englishman's path to ruin is paved with schemes, and in "Light Freights" he catalogs every delicious failure. This collection gathers tales of sailors, villagers, and dreamers who pursue fortune through hypnotism, stowaways, tall tales, and various dubious ventures, each one destined to collapse in spectacular fashion. Jacobs writes with a comic's timing and a moralist's eye, exposing the greed, cowardice, and stubborn optimism that drive his characters toward their inevitable undoing. The sea provides his backdrop and his metaphor: treacherous, unpredictable, and utterly indifferent to human ambition.
