The wilderness hunter
This is Roosevelt at his most elemental: not the politician or the Rough Rider of San Juan Hill, but the hunter moving through vast silent country where the buffalo still wandered and the elk bugled from the high ridges. Here is the America that was vanishing even as Roosevelt recorded it, the wilderness that stretched from the Mississippi to the Pacific, populated by grizzlies and cougars and endless herds of ungulates. These are hunting narratives told with the energy and precision of a man who believed the chase revealed character, who measured a life partly by the game it had pursued. Roosevelt writes of tracking wounded elk through mountain snow, of nights spent in makeshift camps with the cold starry sky pressing down, of the hard-won satisfaction when skill and patience were finally rewarded with a trophy specimen. But there is another current running beneath the adventure: the growing awareness that this wilderness was finite, that the men and beasts he hunted were the last of their kind. Roosevelt the conservationist begins to emerge even in these early pages, haunted by what he sees vanishing. For readers who want to understand the complicated, vigorous soul of American conservationism, this is where it begins.
