The Pilgrim's Shell; Or, Fergan the Quarryman: A Tale from the Feudal Times

The Pilgrim's Shell; Or, Fergan the Quarryman: A Tale from the Feudal Times

Eugène Sue

Translated by Daniel De Leon

In the mist-shrouded villages of feudal Brittany, the peasants of Plouernelgroan under the heel of Count Neroweg VI and his monstrous bailiff, Garin the Serf-eater. When a new tax is levied upon families who already surrender nearly everything they harvest, despair spreads through the crowd like plague. But they still have Fergan: the quarryman whose shoulders bear the weight of his community's hopes, whose hands have split stone but never bent to tyranny. When his own son Colombaik disappears into the count's castle, Fergan must do what no serf dare: he must storm the fortress of power itself, or lose everything he loves. Eugène Sue wrote this novel with the fire of a man who believed literature could shatter chains. Published in 1859, it pulses with the revolutionary sentiment of its age, casting medieval oppression as a mirror for contemporary class injustice. This is historical fiction as weapon: brutal, romantic, and utterly unafraid to name its enemies. For readers who crave adventure married to righteous anger, who want their heroes bloodied but unbeaten, The Pilgrim's Shell delivers.
