God, the Invisible King
1917
H.G. Wells, the visionary author of The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds, turned his speculative mind toward the divine in this 1917 theological treatise written in the shadow of World War I. Here Wells constructs a radical, personal vision of God one that exists not in distant heavens or complex ecclesiastical doctrine but within the immediacy of human consciousness and moral striving. He explicitly rejects the Trinity, original sin, and other pillars of orthodox Christianity, arguing that such formulations have become obstructions to genuine spiritual experience. For Wells, the God of nature the remote Creator who set the universe in motion is far less vital than the God of redemption, an intimate presence who speaks directly to the human heart. This is not a systematic theology but a passionate attempt to make the divine accessible to modern, scientifically-minded readers who cannot accept the supernatural machinery of traditional religion. It is the work of a man searching for meaning amid the catastrophe of global war, attempting to reconcile his rationalist outlook with an overwhelming need for spiritual connection.
