Akhnaton, King of Egypt

Akhnaton did the impossible: he murdered the old gods and crowned the sun. In ancient Egypt, a pharaoh wages war against the priests of Amon, demanding that his people worship only Aton, the luminous disk that gives life to all things. But as the temples close and the statues fall, rebellion simmers in the shadows of power. Into this world of cracked altars and trembling faith comes Dio, a Cretan dancer drawn from drowning by Tutankhaton, the pharaoh's envoy. She learns Egyptian dances in the estate of Khnumhotep under the guidance of Pentaur, a fallen priest whose silence carries the weight of a discarded god. Through their eyes, we witness a kingdom torn between the old world and a new, terrifying idea: that truth might be singular, that God might be one. Merezhkovsky, the great stylist of Russia's Silver Age, weaves philosophical depth with sensual imagery, asking what happens when a man decides the gods are wrong. For readers who crave historical fiction that thinks as it feels.
