A Philosophical Dictionary, Volume 02

Voltaire's Philosophical Dictionary is an assault on human stupidity disguised as a reference work. Written in 1764 by the era's most devastating wit, it arranges its attacks alphabetically from 'Atheists' to 'Zeal' - each entry a miniature essay dismantling religious hypocrisy, historical myth, and comfortable assumptions. This is not dry philosophy; it is guerrilla warfare conducted with rapier wit and theatrical disdain. Voltaire was absolutely fearless. He attacks religious persecution, deconstructs biblical miracles, mocks kings and popes alike, and does it all with such elegance that even his enemies had to admire the prose. The dictionary form allows him to be comprehensive and scattershot simultaneously - no topic escapes his scrutiny, no sacred cow remains standing. What makes it endure? Voltaire's fundamental insight: that humans consistently prefer comfortable lies to uncomfortable truths, and the job of the intellectual is to make everyone uncomfortable. His targets may be centuries old, but his method remains vital - the insistence that reason must interrogate everything, especially the things everyone takes for granted.
