A Philosophical Dictionary, Volume 07

Volume VII of Voltaire's iconoclastic dictionary takes aim at some of the most sacred narratives in Western culture. Opening with a forensic examination of the Joseph story, Voltaire dissects the biblical tale of jealousy, betrayal, and forgiveness not as divine revelation but as literature laced with political convenience. He traces the arc of Joseph's rise and fall with the precision of a prosecutor, questioning why certain moral tales gain canonical status while exposing the power structures that sustain them. The volume then turns its gaze to Judea itself, peeling back the theological veneer to examine geography, history, and the peculiar fate of a people caught between empires. Throughout, Voltaire probes the meaning of justice, asking whether it emerges from divine decree or human convenience. The result is a characteristically Voltairean assault on inherited wisdom: irreverent, precise, and devastatingly funny in its refusal to accept anything at face value.
