A Philosophical Dictionary, Volume 04

Voltaire's blade never dulls. In this fourth volume of his Philosophical Dictionary, the great satirist turns his wit to the most sacred cows of eighteenth-century Europe: nationhood, loyalty, justice, and the comfortable illusions by which men justify their prejudices. Here is Voltaire at his most dangerous, not raging against the powerful, but gently, mercilessly exposing the absurdity at the heart of concepts we inherit without questioning. He asks what "country" means to those the nation excludes, what justice serves when it serves only the powerful, what crimes the powerful call virtue. The prose crackles with paradox and precision. These are not mere essays; they are demolition jobs conducted with a smile. For readers who believe thinking should be uncomfortable, who prefer their philosophy armed with irony and their enlightenment served sharp, this volume delivers. It endures because Voltaire understood that the most effective criticism does not shout, it simply makes foolishness visible.
