Zadig; Or, the Book of Fate

Long before Candide made him famous, Voltaire tested his philosophical voice in this wry Oriental tale of a wise man battered by fortune. Zadig, young and virtuous in Babylon, wants only to marry the beautiful Semira. Instead, he loses an eye in a jealous brawl, watches his bride stolen by the villainous Orcan, and tumbles into a chain of misadventures that mock the very idea of divine justice. Each chapter strips away another illusion: the cruelty of the powerful, the hypocrisy of religious certainty, the absurdity of believing virtue leads to happiness. Voltaire wraps sharp skepticism in playful prose, using exotic distance to critique European folly. This is philosophy wearing a smile, the embryonic form of the satirist who would later devastate optimism itself. For readers who want their wisdom laced with irony, their adventure meaningful, and their philosophers unwilling to settle for easy answers.
