A Philosophical Dictionary, Volume 05

Voltaire was never gentle, and this volume proves why. In this trenchant examination of fanaticism, the great satirist turns his gaze on one of humanity's oldest plagues: the capacity for religious conviction to curdle into violence, intolerance, and mass atrocity. With the precision of a surgeon and the wit of a court jester, he dissects how sincere belief becomes warped into a weapon, tracing its manifestations across civilizations and centuries. He offers vivid contrasts between faiths, showing how imagination and fervor can transform spirituality into persecution. Historical examples demonstrate the devastating consequences of zealotry, from inquisitions to pogroms. Yet Voltaire's purpose is not merely to condemn but to prescribe: philosophy and reasoned discourse as the antidotes to this 'epidemic malady' of human nature. This is Enlightenment at its most urgent and relevant, a treatise that remains startlingly pertinent in an age of ideological certainty.
