Zadig, Ou La Destinée, Histoire Orientale
1747
Voltaire's Zadig is a dazzling philosophical entertainment disguised as an Eastern tale. Set in ancient Babylon, it follows the virtuous young Zadig from triumph to catastrophe and back again, as fate repeatedly dismantles his fortunes with what seems like pure malice. Just as he wins the woman he loves, disaster strikes. Just as he finds peace, the world tears it away. The brilliant twist: every time Zadig thinks he understands what's happening, he discovers he's catastrophically wrong. The book argues we see only fragments of reality and dare not judge the whole from a part. By setting his critique in exotic Babylon, Voltaire skewers European society with a slyness that would later blossom into Candide. It's a story about the absurdity of fortune, the limits of human knowledge, and whether virtue can survive in a universe that seems designed to crush it. Sharp, ironic, and unexpectedly moving.

“Neither the Choice of his Friends, nor that of his Dishes, was the Result of Pride or Ostentation. He took Delight in appearing to be, what he actually was, and not in seeming to be what he was not; and by that Means, got a greater real Character than he actually aim'd at. ””

“Mais quoi! dit Zadig, il est donc nécessaire qu'il y ait des crimes et des malheurs? et les malheurs tombent sur les gens de bien! Les méchants, répondit Jesrad, sont toujours malheureux: ils servent à éprouver un petit nombre de justes répandus sur la terre, et il n'y a point de mal dont il ne naisse un bien.””
