The Problem of the Rupee, Its Origin and Its Solution

Long before he became the architect of the Indian Constitution, B.R. Ambedkar produced a work of devastating intellectual clarity on the monetary system that enslaved India's economy. This 1923 treatise dissects the colonial currency regime with surgical precision, tracing how British monetary policy transformed India's gold standard into a gold exchange standard designed not for Indian prosperity but for imperial convenience. Ambedkar excavates the neglected period from 1800 to 1893, revealing the political and economic manipulations that created the rupee problem and arguing for a sovereign monetary system as essential to any meaningful notion of freedom. The book is most remarkable for its refusal to treat currency as mere technicality; it understands money as power, and the control of money as the architecture of domination. Ambedkar's analysis proved prophetic: the Reserve Bank of India he envisioned became reality, and his framework continues to inform debates about monetary sovereignty, development economics, and the legacies of colonial finance. Essential reading for anyone interested in the political economy of liberation, the history of Indian finance, or the mind of one of the twentieth century's most consequential thinkers.
