According to both Norton and to Rothschild, vol. 1 was issued in two states. In this copy the peculiarities of format, printing, and publication ascribed to the first edition, second state of vol. 1 are all present. In particular, leaves X4, a4, and b2 are not cancelled. Vol. 2 of this copy is, however, taken from the second edition. Ch. and Vicar of St. Mary Magdalene, Oxford" is present on the front pastedowns. The errata leaf in volume 1 is wanting
