The Geology of Darling State Park

In this meticulously researched mid-century study, Dodge turns his attention to the ancient bones of northeastern Vermont, revealing how fire and pressure over incomprehensible spans of time carved the landscape we see today. The book systematically examines the igneous formations that intruded into the earth's crust and the metamorphic rocks transformed by heat and compression, walking readers through the slow violence of geological processes that shaped Darling State Park. Dodge writes with the patience of a discipline that measures change in epochs, making the ancient past palpably present. What emerges is both a scientific document and a kind of natural history, showing how the rocks beneath our feet hold the true memory of a place. For readers curious about New England's underpinnings, or anyone who has ever looked at a mountain and wondered what forces birthed it, this book offers answers written in stone.
