The Book-Hunter in London

In the gaslit byways of Victorian London, a peculiar tribe flourished: the book-hunters. W. Roberts chronicles their obsessions, their fierce rivalries, and their quests for First Folios and illuminated manuscripts hidden in the dusty stacks of Holywell Street and the backrooms of Paternoster Row. This is a vivid portrait of a world where a collector might spend a fortune on a single volume, where legendary booksellers commanded reputations as vast as their inventories, and where the line between scholar and eccentric blurred entirely. Roberts writes with the affectionate eye of one who knows his subjects intimately, detailing the peculiar habits, sharp deals, and occasional frauds that animated the antiquarian book trade. The book captures a vanished era when books were sought not merely for their text but for their scarcity, their provenance, and the romantic histories embedded in their bindings and marginalia. Whether recounting the great sales of the century or the humble peripatetic peddlers who supplied the trade, Roberts paints an indispensable portrait of bibliographic culture at its most vibrant. For anyone who has felt the thrill of hunting for a wanted book, or wondered at the characters who built and populated the world of rare books, this Victorian chronicle remains essential reading.
