Printers' Marks: A Chapter in the History of Typography

Before logos and brand identities, printers asserted ownership and artistry through mysterious emblems etched into the opening pages of books. This 1893 examination traces the evolution of printers' marks from crude trade symbols to sophisticated visual signatures that tell us as much about the printers who created them as the books they produced. W. Roberts excavates a forgotten corner of bibliographic history, revealing how these marks simultaneously served as protection against piracy and as expressions of individual creativity within the emerging commercial world of early printing. The book illuminates a period when a Venetian Aldus or a Parisian Estienne could claim their work with the same pride a painter signs a canvas, when the colophon became a declaration of craft. For collectors, typographers, and anyone fascinated by the hidden languages of books, Roberts offers both scholarly rigor and the peculiar pleasure of recognizing a printer's mark across centuries of books and understanding, at last, what it means.
