The Birds of Australia, Vol. 2 of 7

In the 1840s, John Gould and his wife Elizabeth embarked on a two-year expedition to Australia, then largely unknown to Western science. The result was the first comprehensive survey of an entire continent's avian life: 681 species documented, 328 of them entirely new to science. Volume 2 of this seven-volume masterpiece continues the extraordinary undertaking that essentially invented Australian ornithology as a field. The text marries rigorous taxonomic description with the breathless wonder of discovery, while the hand-colored lithographic plates represent some of the finest natural history illustration ever produced. Elizabeth Gould's original drawings, transformed by master lithographers, capture birds of startling strangeness: rainbow lorikeets,灵巧的琴鸟, and creatures with names that sound like Victorian poetry. This is not merely a scientific record but a window into an era when one could still travel to an unknown land and return having added hundreds of species to human knowledge. For anyone who has ever marveled at the intersection of art and science, or dreamed of witnessing the world before it was fully mapped.
