Seneca Fiction, Legends, and Myths

This substantial volume preserves the oral traditions of the Seneca people, one of the six nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, capturing myths, legends, and fiction that had been passed down through generations before meeting the printed page. Compiled by ethnographers Jeremiah Curtin and J.N.B. Hewitt in the early twentieth century, the collection offers rare access to a rich storytelling tradition that shaped Seneca spiritual understanding, moral instruction, and cultural identity. The narratives range from cosmological origin tales explaining the creation of the world to trickster stories, hero cycles, and explanations of natural phenomena woven from the worldview of a sophisticated indigenous civilization. What emerges is not merely a catalog of stories but a living record of how the Seneca understood their place in the universe, their relationships with the natural world, and the forces that governed human life. For readers seeking to understand the depth and complexity of Native American literary heritage, this collection stands as an invaluable window into a tradition that has shaped indigenous thought for centuries.
