Lives of Two Cats

Pierre Loti, the French novelist famous for his exotic travels, returned home to write something far more intimate: a tender account of two cats who shared his household. Pussy White and Pussy Gray move through these pages with the quiet authority of small creatures who know every corner of a home. Loti records their days with the same precision he once gave to distant shores, capturing the rituals of feeding, the warmth of a sunlit window, the soft weight of a sleeping cat against your leg. What unfolds is quietly devastating. This brief, graceful memoir is really about time itself: how it passes, how the creatures we live alongside become woven into our days until their absence would leave a hole we cannot name. Loti writes with delicate specificity about these small lives, never sentimental but genuinely moved by their presence. The book asks readers to consider the quiet loves that fill a home, the ones we too often forget to notice. This is for anyone who has ever loved a cat, or ever lived alongside any creature whose company made a house feel like home.
