Life of Octavia Hill as Told in Her Letters

Octavia Hill didn't just want to house the poor. She wanted to restore their dignity. In these letters, we see the private thoughts of a woman who revolutionized social reform in Victorian Britain, co-founding the National Trust and transforming how cities thought about housing, green space, and human flourishing. These aren't public speeches or carefully crafted essays; they're the raw, immediate dispatches of someone thinking through her work in real time. We watch her wrestle with the ethics of property, grapple with the daily realities of poverty, and build systems that would influence social policy for a century. The letters reveal both her triumphs and her uncertainties: the exhaustion, the political battles, the small victories that kept her going. Through them, we access not just a historical figure but a mind still startlingly relevant, asking questions about housing, class, and community that we still haven't answered.
