Leutnant Gustl
Leutnant Gustl, written by Arthur Schnitzler and first published in 1900, is a novella that follows the inner thoughts of a young lieutenant in Vienna after a humiliating encounter. Unable to seek satisfaction for the insult he receives, Gustl contemplates suicide as he wanders the city. The work is notable for its innovative use of stream-of-consciousness narrative and its critique of militarism and the societal expectations of officers, which led to a scandal that affected Schnitzler's military career. It is also known in English as 'None but the Brave.'
