Legends of Old Honolulu (Mythology)

These are the old stories, the ones Hawaiians told before the world changed forever. Gathered from oral tradition in the early 1900s, Westervelt preserved what remained of a mythological world where Pele's rage shaped volcanoes and the Menehune built walls in a single night. This isn't just a mythology collection, it is a preservation of a people's relationship with the land, the sea, and the divine. The legends span creation accounts where the earth rises from chaos, tales of gods who walk among mortals, and stories of heroes whose exploits echo across the islands. Each story reveals a culture that understood itself as inseparable from the natural world, where every mountain had a name and every wave held a memory. For anyone curious about Hawaiian spirituality beyond the tourist brochures, these are the actual narratives that shaped a civilization, raw, vivid, and deeply connected to the islands' volcanic heart.
