Hawaiian Legends of Volcanoes (mythology)

These are ancient stories told around firesides on volcanic islands, where the land itself breathes fire and the gods walk among mortals. W. D. Westervelt gathered these legends in the early 20th century, preserving tales that had been passed down through generations of Hawaiian storytellers. At the heart of them all stands Pele, the goddess of volcanoes, whose fierce temper shapes islands and whose love affairs with mortal men ignite mountainsides. These are not gentle fairy tales but raw, elemental narratives about creation, destruction, passion, and the thin membrane between human experience and divine power. The Hawaiians watched their volcanoes rumble and erupt, and instead of scientific explanation, they wove magnificent stories about a goddess who digs new land from the sea floor with her magical digging stick. This collection captures that worldview, where the smoking crater and the breaking wave are alive with intention.
