High Wind in Jamaica

High Wind in Jamaica

High Wind in Jamaica

Richard Hughes

A hurricane blows open the door to a family’s carefully constructed world in this devastating 1929 novel. When a violent storm strikes Jamaica, five children from the Bas-Thornton family find themselves at the mercy of pirates who mistake them for easy ransom. What follows is an unsettling exploration of childhood unraveling: the children are thrust into a world of violence and moral ambiguity, their innocence both a shield and a wound. Richard Hughes writes with a surgeon’s precision about what happens when the protective layers of childhood are stripped away too soon, revealing the strange, almost alien logic children employ when confronted with the incomprehensible. The adults in the story remain distant, unseen forces, while the children navigate betrayal, fear, and an unexpected freedom that dawns in the wreckage of their old lives. This is not a adventure story with a happy ending; it is a haunting interrogation of what we owe the young, and what is lost when they are forced to grow up in the crucible of adult violence. It remains one of the most psychologically bracing novels about childhood ever written.
