Farewell to Arms

Farewell to Arms

Ernest Hemingway

The story follows Frederic Henry, an American lieutenant serving with the Italian ambulance corps, who falls desperately in love with Catherine Barkley, a British nurse. What begins as a war romance becomes something far more annihilating. As the Italian army collapses in retreat, Frederic must choose between his allegiances and his heart, and the world offers him nothing but more ways to lose. Hemingway's prose is surgical in its simplicity - dialogue stripped to bone, emotions buried so deep they ache. The famous ending doesn't just conclude a story; it annihilates hope itself. This is not a war novel with a love story, but a love story that uses war to show how completely life can refuse to make sense.
