The Decameron, written by Giovanni Boccaccio between 1349 and 1351, is a collection of one hundred tales narrated by a group of seven women and three men who retreat to a villa outside Florence to escape the plague. This work is significant as it is one of the most important pieces of 14th-century European literature and the progenitor of prose literature in the Italian vernacular.
