Architectural Antiquities of Normandy

Dawson Turner's 1820 work stands as one of the first systematic studies of Norman architecture, documenting the Romanesque buildings of Normandy at a moment when many were still standing in their medieval form. Turner, whose extraordinary collection of drawings and manuscripts would later form the basis of the British Museum's antiquarian holdings, traveled through Normandy with artists, recording cathedrals, abbeys, and castles that shaped the Anglo-Norman world. The engravings capture monuments in a state of preservation that would vanish within decades, buildings altered by restoration, war, and simple neglect. What emerges is not merely an antiquarian catalog but a passionate argument for understanding how Norman design principles crossed the Channel and became embedded in English ecclesiastical architecture. For anyone curious about the deep roots connecting French and British architectural heritage, this remains a remarkable time capsule, preserving details that no longer exist in the buildings themselves.
