Yosemite Legends preserves the sacred oral traditions of the Ah-wah-nee-chees people, recorded in 1904 when these stories were in danger of being lost forever. Bertha H. Smith gathered these tales from the indigenous people of Yosemite Valley, capturing narratives that had been passed down through generations, explaining the creation of iconic landmarks like Bridal Veil Falls and the granite monuments that define the landscape. The legends feature larger-than-life figures: Tu-tock-ah-nu-lah, the Rock Chief who shaped the valleys with his breath; Tis-sa-ack, the Goddess of the Valley whose love and loss echo in the wind; and the great grizzly bear Yo-sem-i-te, from whom the valley takes its name.
