Wild Life in New Zealand. Part I. Mammalia.

A fascinating window into New Zealand's mammalian life at the turn of the twentieth century, this scientific volume documents a land where nature operated on strange terms. Written by G. M. Thomson, the work surveys both the sparse indigenous mammals of New Zealand, chiefly bats and marine species, and the animals that humans had introduced to these isolated islands. The result is a remarkable portrait of a colonial ecosystem in flux, where European settlers observed with clinical curiosity the seals, whales, and odd creatures that had long populated the shores and forests, alongside the rabbits, deer, and mustelids they had brought with them. Thomson writes with the methodical enthusiasm of a naturalist who understood that he was documenting a fauna unlike any other on Earth, one shaped by millions of years of isolation and now rapidly transformed by colonial importation. For readers drawn to natural history, ecological transformation, or the rich oddities of Antipodean wildlife, this early scientific work offers both detailed observation and a sense of discovery.
