When the Word is Given...

In 1960, Louis E. Lomax became one of the first Black journalists to gain unprecedented access to the Nation of Islam, producing this landmark account at a moment when the movement was becoming a transformative force in American race relations. The book traces the movement from its mysterious origins with founder W.D. Fard through its development under Elijah Muhammad, capturing the ideology that would reshape Black nationalist thought in America. But it is Lomax's extensive documentation of Malcolm X's speeches and philosophy that proves most electric here, presenting a voice that was just beginning to challenge the civil rights establishment. Lomax was uniquely positioned to document this moment - a Black writer covering a movement the white press had largely dismissed or distorted. The result is an indispensable historical record made during a crucial turning point in American history.
