Welsh Folk-Lore: A Collection of the Folk-Tales and Legends of North Wales

The fairies of North Wales are not gentle creatures. They steal children, lure travelers into the hills, and punish the proud. In this prize-winning collection, Elias Owen spent years gathering stories from elderly Welsh villagers, preserving oral traditions that were fading as the old ways died. The result is a window into a world where the supernatural bleeds directly into daily life, where a farmer's misfortune might trace back to insulting the 'good folk' and where ancient burial mounds are doorways to other realms. These are not polished literary fairy tales. They are raw, local, specific. Owen recorded what actual people in specific villages believed, what their grandparents had told them, the customs that still governed how they lived. You will find ghosts and giants here, but also the practical superstitions of rural life: what gifts to leave for the fairies, which stones to avoid after dark, how to recognize a bewitched person. Over a century later, this collection endures because it captures something that more literary retellings lose: the texture of belief itself, the way these stories once lived in the mouths and minds of ordinary people. For anyone drawn to the raw stuff of folklore, to the edge where myth meets lived experience, this book opens a door into the Welsh imagination.
