Village Folk-Tales of Ceylon, Volume 1 (of 3)

Long before modern Sri Lanka existed, these stories lived in the mouths of farmers and weavers, passed down through generations in villages that time nearly forgot. Henry Parker recorded them in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, capturing tales told by the cultivating castes of Ceylon, stories of clever demons and foolish kings, of lovers who outwitted death and peasants who tricked the gods. This first volume offers a window into a world where the supernatural threaded through everyday life: where a rice pot might hold a curse, a forest might hide a princess, and a single act of kindness could reshape destiny. These are not sanitized fairy tales. They carry the rough humor, the practical wisdom, and the deep strangeness of a living oral tradition. For readers seeking the raw stuff of folklore, the stories people actually told around fires, this collection remains essential. It endures because human beings have always needed to make sense of their world through narrative, and these tales do it with an earthiness that modern storytelling has largely lost.
