Vampires and Vampirism

One of the earliest scholarly attempts to document vampire folklore across civilizations, this 1914 work compiles accounts that span continents and centuries. Dudley Wright gathered testimonies and legends from the villages of Eastern Europe, the islands of Britain, the Middle East, and the Asian subcontinent, presenting them not as campfire tales but as cultural phenomena worthy of serious examination. The book captures an era when scholars still wrestled with the question of whether these creatures might possess some basis in reality, whether through disease, madness, or forces beyond contemporary understanding. The result is a peculiar time capsule: rigorously compiled yet unashamedly atmospheric. Here lie the raw materials from which our modern vampire mythology would be forged.
