Turkish fairy tales and folk tales

These stories pulse with the exotic magic of the Ottoman Empire's final century. Kúnos, traveling through Istanbul and the provinces in the 1880s, recorded tales that had passed through generations of storytellers in coffeehouses, around village fires, in the mouths of professional meddah narrators. The pages shimmer with mischievous peris, resourceful commoners outwitting padishahs, and animals that hold secret knowledge. This isn't sanitized European fairy tale convention. These are rough, sensual stories from an oral tradition where the line between mundane and miraculous dissolves easily, where djinn dwell in everyday objects and enchanted transformations follow their own peculiar logic. The collection preserves something vanishing: a window into how Ottoman subjects imagined their world, its fears, desires, and particular beauty. For readers who crave folklore in its rawer forms, stories that haven't been smoothed into nursery-room comfort, this 1901 volume remains a singular portal.
