To the American Indian

In 1916, a Yurok woman sat down to write what she feared might be the last record of her people's soul. Lucy Thompson, known to her tribe as Che-na-wah Weitch-ah-wah, composed this book as an act of fierce love and desperate preservation, knowing that colonization, assimilation policies, and time were swiftly erasing her tribe's stories, language, and ways of being. Through thirty-two chapters weaving together Yurok and English, she records the spiritual ceremonies required to become a Talth, the sacred leader of her people. She explains traditions around tobacco cultivation and smoking, the complex system of ki-elth that bound impoverished families to wealthier households in ways distinct from chattel slavery, and the intricate customs surrounding death and burial. Thompson also preserves the living texture of daily life: the names for berries, tea, and mussels, the use of dentalia shells as money and ornament, and the sacred redwoods that sheltered village homes. This is not anthropology from outside looking in. This is an indigenous voice, speaking directly to future generations, saying: we were here, we mattered, remember us.
