Three Studies in Literature

Lewis E. Gates

1899

At the close of the 19th century, literary critic Lewis E. Gates undertook an act of critical archaeology: exhuming the reputations of three figures who had shaped how England read and judged literature. This collection examines Francis Jeffrey, the ferocious Edinburgh Reviewer whose verdicts once made or destroyed literary careers; John Henry Newman, the convert whose prose style redefined religious argument as art; and Matthew Arnold, the poet-critic who became the era's unofficial arbiter of taste. Gates does not simply praise or condemn. He investigates what these men believed, how they wielded power through judgment, and why their influence persists or fades. The result is less a biographical triptych than an inquiry into the nature of literary authority itself: who decides what endures, and what do they sacrifice in the making of canons? For readers interested in the machinery behind the literature we inherit, these studies offer a window into the critical wars that shaped the Victorian literary landscape.
