This Troubled World

In 1938, as fascist regimes consolidated power across Europe and the world held its breath, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt undertook an audacious task: articulating a practical path toward lasting peace. This Troubled World dissects the failed League of Nations, traces the political and economic fractures that allowed aggression to flourish after the Great War, and proposes concrete mechanisms for preventing future conflicts. Roosevelt argues for a strengthened international court, a system to formally identify aggressor nations, coordinated trade embargoes as economic deterrence, and an international peacekeeping force capable of intervening where diplomacy alone fails. Yet she insists that no amount of political machinery can substitute for a deeper transformation in human consciousness. Peace, she contends, requires not merely treaties and institutions but a genuine commitment to tolerance and the recognition that people everywhere share common hopes and fears. Written in elegant, accessible prose that belies its scholarly rigor, this book reads less like a historical artifact and more like a woman speaking directly across decades to our present moment of fractured international order.
