The Unpopular Review Vol. Ijanuary-June 1914

Published in the summer of 1914, this volume captures American intellectual life in the last months before the world changed forever. The essays gathered here wrestle with the same fault lines that would soon tear through Europe: the tension between democracy and oligarchy, the fruits and failures of capitalism, the perpetual struggle between majority rule and minority rights. The collection opens with "The New Irrepressible Conflict," a provocative examination of how disparities in human capacity generate endless social friction between freedom and authority. Written by thinkers who still believed progress lay in education and understanding rather than violent upheaval, these pieces carry a particular poignancy: they are the final intellectual testament of a world about to be shattered by the First World War. The contributors are united by a faith in rational discourse and the possibility of reform through democratic means, making this both a historical artifact and a surprisingly relevant meditation on the anxieties of modern democratic societies.
