The trail of the swinging lanterns : a racy, railroading review of…

The title alone - "The Trail of the Swinging Lanterns" - conjures something far more romantic than standard railway history. And this early 20th century Canadian collection delivers exactly what its subtitle promises: a racy celebration of the iron roads and the singular characters who built them. John Morison Copeland gathers essays and sketches that treat the railroad not as mere infrastructure but as the circulatory system of a young nation coming into itself. Through vivid profiles of influential railway magnates and the tangled histories of competing lines, he captures a pivotal era when tracks meant progress, when the phrase "railroad tycoon" carried both prestige and scandal, and when the mere act of stringing steel through Canadian wilderness felt like a grand and audacious dream. The anecdotes breathe life into what could have been dry official histories - here are stories of engineering triumphs, political chicanery, and the particular madness of laying rail through mountains and muskeg. Dedicated to "those cosmopolitans whose duties are so closely interwoven with the daily transport of people," this is a book for anyone who understands that railways were never just about getting from point A to point B. They were about connecting a vast and stubborn geography to its own future.
