The Swimming Baths of London

In 1870 London, a city of over three million souls, there was scarcely a single place to swim in proper open-air freshwater. R. E. Dudgeon, a surgeon with reformer's zeal, makes an impassioned case for the civic necessity of purpose-built swimming baths. He catalogues the sorry state of London's existing facilities: cramped indoor tepid pools of dubious cleanliness, fetid cold plunge baths, and the Serpentine's limited, polluted access. The gap between what a modern metropolis should offer and what Londoners actually endured is stark. Dudgeon proposes grand open-air baths in Hyde Park, Victoria Park, and beyond, with proper depth, numbered lockable changing boxes, spring-boards, modest fees, and lifesaving instruction. He argues fiercely for genuine provision for women swimmers and challenges the British fixation on sea-bathing when freshwater swimming in open air offered superior health benefits. This is Victorian reformist optimism at its most concrete: a vision of urban pleasure and hygiene that continental cities had already achieved. As much a window into the era's anxieties about the body, cleanliness, and the modern city as a practical blueprint.
